BTech/BE: Eligibility, Admission and Scope

Introduction

Bachelor of Technology (BTech) is a four-year full-time course designed for students who aspire for a career in engineering and technology. It is one of the most popular courses among students and comprises both theoretical and practical knowledge. The course offers innumerable job opportunities in sectors like Information Technology, Consultancy and Management and Data analysis. B.Tech graduates have promising careers in PSUs and government sectors as well. There are endless options when it comes to institutes offering BTech courses. You need to make the right decision as to which one fits your choice of career and budget.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for BTech are the same for all parts of India.

  • Students need to pass Class 12 in Science stream with Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry as the subjects to be eligible to apply for BTech course.
  • A minimum score of 50% is compulsory in Class 12 to apply for engineering colleges across the country. There is a relaxation of 5% in the minimum qualifying marks for students belonging to reserved categories.
  • Students pursuing Biomedical Engineering need to have Biology as one of the subjects in Class 12.
  • Some colleges set the maximum age bar of candidates seeking admission to BTech courses as 24.

Students need to present the original copies of all documents and marksheets at the time admission for verification.

Admission

Students seeking admission for BTech course need to clear entrance test specified by the particular institute followed by personal interviews. Some of the popular entrance exams include:

  • Joint Entrance Exams (JEE) Main
  • Joint Entrance Exams (JEE) Advanced
  • Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Exam (VITEEE)
  • Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test (BITSAT)
  • Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET)
  • Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET)
  • West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam (WBJEE)

Some colleges/universities only ask for Class 12 performance for BTech admission such as:

  • Anna University, Tamil Nadu
  • Rajasthan Technical University
  • Government of Madhya Pradesh
  • Punjab Technical University

Admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

In order to get admission to IITs, the students must clear the following exams:

  1. National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts JEE Main Exam every year for IIT BTech aspirants. The top 1,50,000 to 2,00,000 candidates qualify for the second round.
  2. In the second round, these qualified candidates appear for JEE Advanced Exam.
  3. Students who clear JEE Advanced Exam need to register for centralised admission process held by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). IITs release the opening and closing rank for BTech and depending on the candidates’ rank, they get admission.
  4. Once admission is done, the students can download the provisional admission letter from JoSAA site and pay the fees online.
  5. After fees payment, students need to inform the prescribed reporting centre for documents verification and visit the institute for verification within the stipulated time.

National Institutes of Technology (NITs) follows the same process as IITs with the difference that there is no JEE Advanced Exam in this case.

Scope
